Tension…

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

I don’t have an easy way to graph tension on this blog, but if I did, you’d be looking at a fairly high levels over the last two weeks or so.

Arabic class is a blast and I’m so glad I’m sitting in on it this semester. The boys are doing well-ish in school and that gives me a nice, warm feeling. Work is absolutely the pits, but that’s my own (seasonal and situational) depression talking more than the actual work, I think.

I don’t have any pretty pictures to show you. I don’t have much to say. I just wish that I could fix a lot of the things that seem to be wrong all around me.

Thor’s Day

Thursday, January 20th, 2005

I went to Arabic class today. I have to say it was the shortest language class I’ve ever had. ;) Today is a holiday in the Muslim world. I don’t know the translation, but the day is called aid alaDha… Try saying that three times quickly. *heh* I heard on NPR that it’s similar to Thanksgiving Day in the US.

More and more I’m feeling less and less like being a graduate student. I feel like I want to learn more of the Arabic language, and I want to study other languages, and I want to become a better Go player.

I’ve been reading comp.lang.scheme on usenet lately. It’s reminding me of how much I really enjoyed that programming language.

Up, up, and away

Tomorrow is the first day of spring classes at KU. I haven’t studied the Arabic vocabulary that I’d intended to, and I’m not very excited about the new beginning. To a certain extent, I assume the malaise has to do with the weather. We’re finally getting some sunshine here that isn’t tied to 8 degree weather, though, so I guess that’s a Good Thing.

Over the weekend our family went on walks together and played and had a wonderful time. Then we Adult Monsters forced the Kid Monsters into anger with much cleaning of their bedroom. The end result is quite lovely and no one is in hate with anyone else, as far as I’m aware. :)

Today I had a wonderful lunch with Christina. Chili and home-baked bread are an amazing way to spend the noon hour. We played a game of Galaga and she kicked my behind into next WEEK! :) Woooot! In less than an hour I’m going to meet with cow-orkers about the KU Graduation System that’s being developed. Tonight I hope to watch KU ride a victorious wave over the ‘Huskers.

Amen.

For a Sunday…

Sunday, January 9th, 2005

It’s been a quiet morning. I’m at work as part of my fix-it team duties. Luckily, I have some time to sit and reflect. It’s been a week or two since I last updated here…

My brother got me hooked on learning about Go. It’s an incredible game that dates back, possibly, as far as 2000 BCE. There are only a few rules to play, but the subtleties of play are incredible.

I got an “A” in Arabic for the fall semester. I plan on auditing it this spring rather than taking it as a class. I want to learn it, but I don’t want to pay for it. ;-)
