Home Improvement

Monday, June 27th, 2005

We’ve been so very busy that we’ve pretty much lived like shut-ins for the past week or two. I was glad that we got the mower yesterday and I was able to mow the yard for the first time. That was kind of fun… I’d rather my hands stop shaking sooner afterwards, though. ;)

I pulled a dead wire that was disconnected from the main service and ran the entire length of the house in the crawl space. Boy was that interesting. I’ve learned a lot about what it’s like under our Mint*. It’s cool and not too damp and surprisingly unshort, given the circumstances. I don’t have to crawl as much as walk on all fours.

I added a dimmer switch to the dining room last night and wired up an old fixture there as well… I gather that it came from Christina’s childhood home. It’s pretty cool if you ask me. I also went through the attic to the living room and put up a box that would hold the light fixture that we’ve now mounted in there.

We’ve also removed the plywood section from the living room wall, helped get rid of some of the ants that live in that part of the house, re-insulated, and drywalled. We’ve also taped and mudded and we’re getting close to ready to paint there. There is one more hole in a wall (that was created because the previous owners didn’t believe in door stoppers) and then we’re pretty well set to paint the rest of the house… I think.

I tire.

*Mint, in this case, is more or less the nickname of our house… it’s minty green. I’ve also called it Casa Hierba and Casa Verde at various points.

Coming Home…

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

We closed on the new house on Friday of last week and we’ve spent quite a lot of time over there cleaning, sanding, spackling, painting, and various other things ending in -ing. At this point we’re just about ready to paint the living room. Christina already finished painting the dining room. I feel very much like a home owner who doesn’t live in his castle yet. I think we’ll be moving the bulk of our stuff around the second week of July or so. At least, that’s what I’m guessing today.

Yesterday we went to Kansas City to be at the hospital for the birth of my sister’s baby. They named him Owen Andrew and he weighed in at 8 pounds 5 ounces. He was 20 inches long and seemed to cry only when he was passed from one set of arms to the next. I’m really excited for their family. I think Will will make a great older brother. :)

Home Sweet Home

Wednesday, June 15th, 2005

We are now two days away from closing on our first home. There will be a lot of paperwork, I imagine, but there doesn’t seem to be anything blocking our way now. I’m really excited about it and looking forward to spending the night there on Friday. :)

Movies and rest

Saturday, June 11th, 2005

Today has officially been a weird day. I got up at 7:15 this morning in order to host a garage sale. It was rained out… completely. By the noon hour, the sky had cleared and things were just lovely.

David was supposed to have a baseball game (a make-up game for a previous rain-out) and when I got to the fields, the gate was locked.

SO… I went and saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith all by myself (I’m all grown up!) and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The plot reminded me of something, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I think there was something similar to Prizzi’s Honor or something, but I never did see that whole movie as a kid.

ANYway. I found, much to my dismay, that last Sunday was a graduation party for two of my friends rather than this Sunday… Things have been so nuts lately what with the house buying and work that I totally misplaced my weeks. VERY lame. Bad show, Jonathan.

On a brighter note, I was able to get in touch with one of them and apologize this evening. Yay!

New Look and Feel

Friday, June 10th, 2005

I decided to make the leap today from WordPress 1.2 to 1.5. The changes are pretty substantial and I have a bunch of things I need to figure out still, but here we are and it’s working pretty well, I think.

I hope you all enjoy it, and let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Family Reunions

Thursday, June 2nd, 2005

Wow. It’s been another year since our last set of family reunions. We went down to northeastern Oklahoma (near Grove) again for one reunion and to Neosho, Missouri for another. I had an amazing time and really enjoyed seeing family and friends again.

We took lots of pictures and maybe I’ll get a few of them posted here soon.

Happy June, folks!
