Loss

Monday, January 30th, 2006

I’ve been trying to think about how to write some of the things down that have careened through my head in the past day or so. Yesterday my boss called me at home… usually I’d figure that meant that some job or other blew up. This time, though, he called to tell me that one of my coworkers had died in a car accident.

Steve… Steve was one of the people who got me interested in programming. He got me interested in networks, HTML, building my own computer at home… He was one of the smartest, coolest-in-a-crunch dudes you’d ever want to work with. He didn’t flare up. He didn’t scream. He solved problems.

He leaves behind his wife and two young children… and so many others whom he touched whether he knew it or not.

Update

Friday, January 20th, 2006

In a fit of nothing-better-to-do-ness I managed to upgrade to wordpress version 2.0. Nothing looks different, probably, to you reading this, and that’s good, I think. Eventually I want to try out other themes, but for now this is quite nice.

The interface to write a post has changed significantly… and not all of it for the better. I’ll have to see about turning off this nearly WYSIWYG editor and go for a straight text edit.

Classes started today for the university and things around here are quite busy in spite of the spiteful weather the clouds threw at us.

I hope you’re warm and enjoying your day, wherever you are!

New Year!

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

I’ve enjoyed the new year so far and I hope you all have as well. Last night I got to see March of the Penguins with my family and I thought it was a very nice documentary.

I finished reading Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars last night and all I can say is that I wish I’d read it as a boy or teen. When I could let go of my adult ideas and allow myself a Mars that has atmosphere and culture and tradition, I found myself so absorbed that I would smile and frown and wish to talk with John Carter and Dejah Thoris there in my room. Barsoom is beautiful.

Today I’m in meetings most of the morning and trying to keep my head on straight. Wish me luck! ;)
