Memorial and rebirth

Monday, April 17th, 2006

My grandma’s memorial service was held on Saturday morning. The service was very nice… lots of crying, singing, and thinking. I wanted to send a public, if seldom read, thank you note to everyone who has supported us through this rough time.

Thank you.

I went up to the Underground for lunch today… grabbed a Chik-Fil-A (TM) sammich, waffle fries, and a chocolate chip cookie… walked up to pay for it… and the lady at the register smiled and said hello and called me by name.

Needless to say I was a little bit shocked, but after a second, I recognized her… We were in high school band together… I was a drum major, she was a quad player… we were an item for a little while. I replied to her hello, calling her by name in turn… We both have two kids now…

Huge waves of high-school-and-early-college guilt washed over me on my walk back to work…

I think I should talk with her and try to lay some of this memory to rest.

Bookish stuff

Or more appropriately, Mothers

My mother’s mother died on Thursday night.

I arrived at her bedside just a few minutes after she’d passed away.

The relief of not hearing her labored breathing was, at that moment, greater than my sadness that she had died.

Mom and I talked and shared and I spent some time working with her at the funeral home on Friday.

I think everyone seems to be happy that she is no longer in pain and no longer hampered by the shell that held her prisoner for so long.

Now I search my own feelings to see what I’ve got left in me after a very long weekend.
